Contra zero effort AI flashcards

Every few weeks, you’ll see some app promising that you can just paste in an article/textbook/etc. and they will get AI to generate flashcards for it to help you learn. These efforts are inherently doomed to fail. You cannot learn like this. For these flashcards to work, you have to do the work yourself.

One of the cardinal rules of flashcards are that you should only make flashcards for concepts you have learned. If you haven’t learned, the card is doomed to turn you into, for lack of a better phrase, a stochastic parrot. You have some vague guess of what is on the back with no understanding of why. What is the point of knowledge like that? Even if you’re looking to pass a class, this is a horrid waste of time.

That’s not to say that I don’t think AI can’t help you learn. I think they can help find ways to order topics for students that make more sense. I think they can find holes in your understanding and poke at them faster than a human could. But rather than being some zero-effort hack, AI for learning increases your rate of failure and makes you feel much dumber in the short term, because that’s the price you pay for learning.

Anyways, if I see another one of these things I might vomit, so ye. that’s that.
