I think part of why algorithms suck is that they remove human agency and don’t align with what we want. At the end of the day, all the large tech companies really just care about how long you’re spending on their site. Maybe it’s worse for your mental health past a certain point, but that hurts their bottom line if they tell you to get off of whatever short form content is now popular.
Algorithms don’t take agency into account which is the problem. This is something that Joel Lehman talked about. When I use YouTube, I want to learn extremely information dense things and then get off. You should have an inbox that is clearable.
Beware of infinite scrolling. Those are things that inherently do not respect a user. If they did, they would try to model how much is actually good for you before shutting themselves off.
